A nearly 60-year-old elephant slide at Dashin Elementary School in Beidou Township, Changhua County, was at risk of being demolished due to its age. To preserve this cherished piece of campus history, the school secured funding from the county government to transform it into a three-dimensional flower terrace. This week, as part of its 60th-anniversary celebration, Dashin Elementary held an unveiling ceremony for the newly revitalized elephant slide. Alumni, including Zhang Jianfeng and his four-generation family, attended to relive treasured childhood memories.
Dashin Elementary School, established 60 years ago, recently hosted its anniversary celebration with the theme "Glorious Sixty, Embracing a Bright Future." Alumni from across generations joined the festivities, including current PTA president Zhang Jianfeng. His family has a long-standing legacy at the school, with his great-grandfather Zhang Wuji, grandfather Zhang Dongbo, and father Zhang Huiqing all serving as PTA presidents. This year, the entire family came together to celebrate, witnessing how childhood memories continue to be passed down.
Zhang Jianfeng shared that the elephant slide has been part of the school for at least 60 years, with all four generations of his family having played on it. Although it no longer meets current safety regulations, the community couldn’t bear to see it removed. Instead, the slide was given a creative makeover: the sides were painted with scenes of the school, the sliding surface was turned into a layered flower terrace, and the stairs were renovated with wooden steps for walking and viewing. The transformation has breathed new life into the once-abandoned slide, turning it into a vibrant campus landmark and a favorite photo spot. It’s a beautiful way to preserve childhood memories in a fresh and meaningful form.

The iconic elephant slide at Dashin Elementary School in Beidou Township, Changhua County, lovingly referred to as a "grandfather-level" relic, has been given a stunning makeover. Once an unused and aging feature, the slide has now been transformed into a charming highlight of the campus. Today, as part of Dashin's 60th anniversary celebrations, the school held an unveiling ceremony for the revitalized slide, with hopes that it will continue to bring joy to students and preserve precious childhood memories.
The anniversary festivities, themed "Glorious Sixty, Embracing a Bright Future," featured a sports day, athletic performances, and exhibitions showcasing student achievements. The centerpiece of the celebration was the rebirth of the elephant slide, which has been beautifully redesigned.
The updated slide now features colorful artwork depicting scenes from the school on both sides. The sliding surface has been converted into a tiered flower terrace, while the old stairs were rebuilt with wooden steps for strolling and admiring the view. After the unveiling, Changhua County Magistrate Wang Huei-mei and Beidou Township Mayor Yen Hung-lin joined others in climbing the revamped slide to enjoy the elevated view of the campus.
Magistrate Wang highlighted the county's investment in Dashin Elementary over the years, supported by Speaker Hsieh Tien-lin and county councilors. Recent funding has gone toward projects like beautifying the elephant slide, repainting school buildings, renovating the sports field, installing a PU track, upgrading the playground, and improving facilities like the library. Additional upgrades include repairing the carport, waterproofing and insulating roofs, and adding a wellness exercise station, with a total investment exceeding NT$15 million.
PTA President Zhang Jianfeng, the fourth generation in his family to serve in this role, followed in the footsteps of his great-grandfather Zhang Wuji, grandfather Zhang Dongbo, and father Zhang Huiqing. Zhang and his family attended the celebration and were moved to see their shared memories of the elephant slide preserved and revitalized. He expressed his hope that the redesigned slide will continue to delight Dashin students and brighten their childhood experiences.
